Tips for Window Cleaning in the Spring

May 15, 2023 by Vanessa Cortez

With the arrival of spring, it’s the perfect time to give your windows a much-needed cleaning. After a long winter, windows accumulate dirt, grime, and streaks that can obstruct your view and make your home look dull. But don’t worry! We have compiled a list of helpful tips to make your window cleaning experience efficient and effective, leaving you with sparkling, streak-free windows.

Gather the necessary tools

Before you begin, ensure you have all the necessary tools and supplies. Some essential items include a bucket, squeegee, microfiber cloth, a soft-bristle brush, window cleaner solution or a homemade mixture of water and vinegar, and a ladder or step stool if you have high windows.

Choose the right time

Timing is crucial when it comes to window cleaning. Choosing a cloudy day or when the sun isn’t directly hitting the windows is best. Exposure to direct sunlight can lead to the rapid drying of the cleaning solution, resulting in unsightly streaks. Additionally, avoid cleaning windows when it’s windy, as it can blow dirt and debris onto freshly cleaned surfaces.

Remove dirt and debris

Remove loose dirt, dust, or cobwebs from the window frames, sills, and tracks. Use a soft-bristle brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to sweep away the debris gently. This step will prevent dirt from spreading and scratching the glass during cleaning.

Prepare the cleaning solution

If you prefer using a store-bought window cleaner, follow the instructions on the label. However, a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative is to create your cleaning solution by mixing equal water and vinegar in a spray bottle. This solution is effective in cutting through grease and grime on the glass.

Start from the top

Begin the glass cleaning process at the uppermost section and gradually work downward. This will prevent drips and streaks from forming on the already-cleaned areas. Spray the cleaning solution onto the window, allowing it to sit for a few moments to loosen any stubborn dirt or marks.

Use a squeegee

To achieve a streak-free finish:

  1. Use a squeegee to remove the cleaning solution from the glass.
  2. Start at the window’s top corner and pull the squeegee across the glass in a smooth, downward motion.
  3. Wipe the squeegee blade with a clean cloth after each pass to prevent streaks.

Tackle stubborn stains

For any persistent stains or marks on the glass, try using a small amount of undiluted vinegar or a specialized glass cleaner. Directly apply the solution to the stain and softly scrub utilizing a microfiber cloth or a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse the area thoroughly afterward.

Don’t forget the window frames

While focusing on the glass is essential, cleaning the window frames and sills is equally important. Use a cloth dipped in the cleaning solution to wipe away dirt and grime from these areas. Be attentive to the corners and crevices where dust tends to gather.

Dry and polish

Once you have finished cleaning the windows, use a clean, lint-free microfiber cloth or a newspaper to dry and polish the glass. Wipe circularly to remove any remaining streaks or moisture, leaving your windows crystal clear and gleaming.

Regular maintenance

To keep your windows looking their best, incorporate regular maintenance into your routine. Clean the windows at least twice a year, preferably in the spring and fall. Additionally, consider installing window screens to prevent dirt and debris from accumulating on the glass.

Safety first

When cleaning windows, it’s essential to prioritize safety. If you have windows out of reach or great heights, consider using a sturdy ladder or hiring a professional window cleaning service. Ensure the ladder is secure and on a stable surface to prevent accidents or falls. If you’re uncomfortable with heights, leaving the job to the experts is better.

Be mindful of window screens

If your windows have screens, remove them before cleaning. Screens can accumulate dust and grime over time, so take the opportunity to wash them separately. Gently rinse the screens with water or use a mild soap solution, scrubbing lightly with a soft brush. Ensure they are fully dry before reattaching them to the windows.

Avoid harsh chemicals

While it’s tempting to use strong chemical cleaners, they can harm your health and the environment. Opt for eco-friendly cleaning solutions or create your own using natural ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, or baking soda. These alternatives effectively remove dirt and grime without leaving harmful residues.

Consider professional window cleaning

If you have large or hard-to-reach windows or need more time or inclination to clean them, consider hiring a professional window cleaning service. They have the expertise, tools, and equipment to handle any window cleaning job efficiently and safely. Professional cleaners can also help clean window tracks, screens, and hard-to-remove stains.

Maintain window cleanliness

After investing time and effort into cleaning your windows, it’s essential to maintain their cleanliness for as long as possible. Regularly dust and wipe down window sills and frames to prevent the accumulation of dirt and debris. Keep an eye out for any signs of mold or mildew and address them promptly to avoid further damage to the windows.

Clean windows from the inside and outside

To achieve spotless windows, cleaning the inside and outside surfaces is essential. Even if your windows aren’t exposed to the elements, the inside surfaces can accumulate dust, fingerprints, and other marks. Clean both sides of the windows for a complete and spotless result.

Pay attention to details

When cleaning windows, pay attention to the minor details that can significantly affect the overall appearance. Use a soft cloth or a cotton swab dipped in the cleaning solution to wipe down window hardware, such as handles, locks, and hinges. These areas can gather grime and affect the overall cleanliness of the windows.

Seek professional advice for specialized windows

If you have specialized windows, such as stained glass or tinted windows, you should seek professional advice on the appropriate cleaning methods. These windows may require specific care and cleaning solutions to avoid damage or discoloration. Contact the manufacturer or a professional window cleaner for guidance tailored to your window type.

By following these tips, you can make your window cleaning endeavors in the spring both effective and efficient. Enjoy the benefits of clear, sparkling windows that enhance the aesthetics of your home and create a bright and inviting atmosphere. With a bit of time and effort, your windows will be ready to showcase the beauty of the spring season.
